Prayerwalking does not need to be complicated -- it is simply praying while walking. You can pray while walking for exercise, or you may be involved in an organized effort to saturate a city or neighborhood with prayer. It may be as simple as praying for the needs of people, or it may be used to target areas that need to hear the Good News of Jesus and His love.

Prayerwalking is intentional praying. It is setting aside a time to walk in order to pray. It is deliberate intercession for others.

Prayerwalking is involvement in spiritual warfare. People without Jesus as their Savior are being held in bondage by Satan and need to be set free. Prayerwalking is a weapon that may be used to attack these spiritual strongholds by bombarding them with spiritual power through prayer.

Prayerwalking is not an end in itself. It is preparation for efforts to bring the Good News of Jesus to every man, woman, and child. These efforts may come as part of an organized endeavor, but it may also come as an encounter initiated by God's Holy Spirit during prayerwalking.

P U R P O S E

We fight with weapons that are different from those the world uses. Our weapons have power from God that can destroy the enemy's strong places. (2 Corinthians 10:4, New Century Version)

The Gulf War of 1991 was ended quickly when the ground forces marched on Iraq. One of the reasons for success was the previous strategic bombing of enemy strongholds by the U.S. Air Forces. The use of air power was preparation for the ground attack.

Prayerwalking can spiritually strike at the heart of Satanic strongholds in cities, neighborhoods and families prior to an attempt to share the Good News of Jesus with every man, woman, and child. Prayerwalking allows us to see the needs and the "lostness" of our neighborhoods and cities. It helps us focus our prayers on these needs and on the spiritual bondage and blindness of people without Jesus.

And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. (Romans 8:26, New Living Translation)

1) Be consistent and faithful in prayerwalking your designated area. Preparing to share the Good News by prayerwalking is a planned time of intercession.

2) Map out an area that can be readily covered by one or two individuals. An overly ambitious undertaking is not likely to have a consistent follow-through in the long term.

3) Before prayerwalking, see if you can discover some helpful information about the area that will help you to pray "on site with insight" as you engage in prayerwalking. Also, you may find some Biblical principles on prayer that will add knowledge and understanding to your prayers.

4) Pray for the empowering of God's Holy Spirit, that He would give you wisdom as you pray. Ask for God's Holy Spirit to guide and direct you as you are prayerwalking.

5) As God begins to use you in response to your own prayers, be ready to share these positive experiences with others in the Body of Christ.

P O W E R

[Jesus]: "But when the Holy Spirit comes to you, you will receive power. You will be my witnesses — in Jerusalem, in all of Judea, in Samaria, and in every part of the world." (Acts 1:8, New Century Version)

The power for our praying is found in the Word of God and through the Holy Spirit. These two form the basis for powerful praying. Read aloud or quote Scripture as you pray and walk. Rephrase the truths of the Word in your own words, and pray them to God as you continue your prayerwalking.

[Jesus]: "And when two or three of you are together because of me, you can be sure that I'll be there." (Matthew 18:20, The Message)

As you walk, keep your eyes open and be observant. Ask God to let you see through His eyes.

Pray aloud, even if you speak softly. Verbalizing your prayers helps you to focus on the object of your prayers.

Allow the Holy Spirit to lead your prayer. Pray for what you see and what you don't see -- the people behind the walls and doors of homes that need Jesus.

Try prayerwalking with others. Take turns praying short prayers about a certain subject or area of focus.

Walk slowly to allow time to observe.

Claim God's love and compassion for the people and ask God to remove all spiritual hindrances, tearing down all barriers that are obstacles to placing faith in Jesus.

Be alert to how the Holy Spirit may be leading. Sometimes it may be to speak to someone along the way. Without prying or manipulating, be sensitive to doors that may be opening to share the Good News of Jesus. Be aware of opportunities to pray for spiritual and other needs.

While prayerwalking should be an intentional activity, anytime and anywhere you are walking is also an opportunity to pray.

Quietly prayerwalk your work area -- and make sure that the quality and excellence of your work reflects positively on your relationship with Jesus Christ.

If you are a student, quietly pray as you walk around your school, and pray as you walk the halls and pass by classroom doors.

Prayerwalk through your neighborhood and talk to God about the people who live there. As best you can, pray for each home on your street by name.

Using wise discretion, prayerwalk the areas of the community which are obvious strongholds of Satan.
